Certain medications – both prescription and over-the-counter – can have side effects on the eyes. These effects may include dryness, blurred vision, changes in color perception, or damage to the retina or optic nerve. Not all patients experience problems, but the risk can increase with higher doses or long-term use.

Some common medications that may affect eye health include:

  • Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) – may impact the retina with long term use
  • Pentosan Polysulfate (Elmiron) – may cause a unique type of macular degeneration
  • Tamoxifen – may also impact the macula
  • Steroids – may raise eye pressure or cause cataracts

Other medications include amiodarone, certain antihistamines, niacin, among others. Regular monitoring by an ophthalmologist is essential. With appropriate screening, most patients can continue their medications safely while preserving good vision. If you have questions or would like to schedule an appointment, please contact our clinic.
